People using Instagram assume that some of their data is public, when it supposedly is not.

This is partly a UI/UX issue, in that people will raise an eyebrow when unexpectedly seeing their activity presented on a map. Sure.

But there's another issue, that is trust. Products out of Meta have a … shall we say … reputation for how they handle data. Right now Meta is in that uncomfortable place where people still use their apps (good!) but they're wary as they do so (not so good!).

The takeaway lesson? If your app's end-users trust you, they're more likely to see new features with delight. If they don't trust you, they'll assume that every app change is a(nother) data grab. Oh, and your app isn't as sticky as Facebook or Instagram, which means those end-users will be less hesitant to leave.
