The AI talk versus the AI walk
2025-07-07
A side-by-side of two headlines. Left: WSJ: 'CEOs Start Saying the Quiet Part Out Loud: AI Will Wipe Out Jobs.' Right: BBC: 'I'm being paid to fix issues caused by AI.'

Two headlines, side-by-side, tell you a lot about the state of genAI business adoption.

In the one, we have the execs who crow about AI allowing them to reduce headcount.

In the other, we have the on-the-ground people whom companies quietly engage to fix the bots' mistakes.

Both of these can hold true! It's possible for AI to take a bite out of the org chart while also requiring some assistance to keep it going. And, over time, it's possible that AI will become more capable and therefore able to tackle a wider array of tasks.

But that's the future. If you're replacing people with AI today, then you need AI to work today. Bold proclamations will not make an AI model do something it's simply not qualified to do.

The takeaway lesson?

If you want your company to achieve its AI potential, you need to:

1/ Develop knowledge of what AI can do for you (data literacy and AI literacy)

2/ Devise a plan for using it in your company (data strategy)

3/ Evaluate and prioritize your opportunities for upside and downside (risk management)

I can help with all three. If you're serious about putting AI to work in your company, reach out.
