"Tokenmaxxing" is costly and wasteful
2026-05-13

Yesterday I pointed out that "tokenmaxxing" and token-use leaderboards were terrible measures of your company's AI progress.

Today, I see that:

1/ The monthly bills are giving some execs sticker shock. (The quote in that article's headline loosely translates to: "developers are becoming token-eating machines.")

2/ Employees are turning to needless uses of genAI in order to meet (artificial, inflated) expectations of token usage.

To sum it up: Your employees are frustrated and so is your CFO.

Focusing on token usage is a waste of money and morale. It only serves to make your genAI provider rich at your expense.

Still convinced that "tokenmaxxing" is the way to go?

You're much better off focusing on how AI makes your company faster, more effective, less risky, or some other flavor of "better."
