Writing-assistance app Grammarly created genAI-based avatars of writers without first getting permission. It's now facing a class-action lawsuit.
This is another example of something that looks like an AI problem on the surface, but it's really an AI-product-management problem.
In particular, this sounds like the kind of problem that would have turned up during a pre-flight risk assessment. So either Grammarly didn't perform such an assessment, or they did not heed the results.
The take-away lesson?
This happened to Grammarly, but it doesn't have to happen to you.
You can run your product plans through a series of checks to avoid costly blunders and reputational damage.
