An image with four quadrants. The top-right quadrant, marked 'PERFECTION,' is the intersection of 'Machines do it well' and 'People hate doing it'.

What are good use cases for AI? Companies are still having a hard time sorting that out.

One year ago today, I created this image and shared it in my newsletter. I didn't realize at the time how often I'd need to dust it off and share it again, but it's shown some real staying power.

Over the last year we've all seen companies focus on that bottom-left quadrant, where the machines do the job poorly and people want to do the work.

If news stories are any indication, companies are trying hard to avoid the upper-right quadrant. I'm not sure why they would do that. But they are.

Let's see how many times I have to bring out this image over the coming year. (I'd prefer that count to be zero.)
